Nathrop isn't a traditional mountain town with a row of hotels around a walkable downtown. The places to stay are scattered through the valley, along Chalk Creek, and toward the mountains.
That's part of the appeal. Instead of choosing which hotel block you want to stay on, you're choosing between hot springs, a mountain ranch, a cabin beside a campground, or a quieter place tucked farther into Chalk Creek Canyon.
Nathrop also sits almost exactly between Buena Vista and Salida, with Browns Canyon, the Arkansas River, Mount Princeton, St. Elmo, hot springs, hiking, fishing, and mountain roads all close by.

Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort
Mount Princeton is Nathrop's largest and most full-service lodging option, spread across 70 acres along Chalk Creek beneath the dramatic Chalk Cliffs.
Lodging ranges from traditional lodge rooms to Hillside and Cliffside rooms, Creekside Suites, and larger cabins for families and groups.
The major advantage is obvious: overnight stays include access to the resort's hot springs, so you can soak before or after a day hiking, fishing, skiing, exploring St. Elmo, or traveling around the Arkansas River Valley.
The resort also has restaurants, spa services, fitness facilities, and seasonal recreation, making it the easiest option if you want a trip that doesn't require constantly driving somewhere else.

Ways to Stay at Mount Princeton
Lodge Rooms
The main Lodge puts you near the front desk, restaurants, spa, historic bathhouse, and hot springs.
Rooms vary in configuration and work well for couples, solo travelers, and smaller families who want the most convenient resort location.
Hillside & Cliffside
These rooms sit farther up the property and trade some of the central-lodge convenience for mountain views and a slightly more spread-out resort setting.
Selected Hillside and Cliffside rooms are dog-friendly for an additional fee.
Creekside & Cabins
Creekside Suites put you close to Chalk Creek, while the resort's cabins provide kitchens, living areas, fireplaces, and more room for families and groups.
Some cabins are also dog-friendly.
A Colorado Guest Ranch
Deer Valley Hot Springs Ranch
Deer Valley has been welcoming guests to Chalk Creek Canyon since 1954 and offers a much more traditional mountain-ranch experience than a standard hotel.
The historic lodge has a small collection of private guest rooms, each with its own bathroom. Guests also have shared gathering spaces including a lounge with a fireplace and a large deck looking out toward the surrounding mountains.
The property also has larger cabins, pools and hot tubs, and space for groups, retreats, reunions, and longer stays.
If you're looking for something quieter and more old-school than Mount Princeton, Deer Valley is one of the most distinctive lodging choices in Nathrop.
Good for: families, groups, historic ranch atmosphere, lodge stays, retreats, and travelers who want to stay deeper in Chalk Creek Canyon.
A Practical Mountain Basecamp
Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park Cabins
Chalk Creek Campground isn't just for tents and RVs. The campground also has fully equipped cabins for travelers who want the atmosphere of a campground without sleeping outside.
The park-model cabins sleep up to six and include a private bedroom with a queen bed, twin bunks, a pull-out sofa, full bathroom, and stocked kitchen.
Each cabin also has a porch with outdoor seating and a gas grill, making them especially useful for families and longer stays where eating every meal at a restaurant isn't practical.
The campground itself sits along Chalk Creek, with shaded creekside areas in the lower campground and broad mountain views from the upper RV park.
It's also centrally located for Browns Canyon, Mount Princeton Hot Springs, St. Elmo, Buena Vista, Salida, and the Arkansas River.
The cabins are seasonal and do not allow pets.

Why Stay in Nathrop?
Nathrop is one of the most useful places to base a trip if you want to explore both ends of the central Arkansas River Valley.
Between Buena Vista & Salida
Buena Vista is just up the valley and Salida is downriver, making it easy to explore both towns without changing lodging.
Close to Browns Canyon
Nathrop sits beside the northern end of Browns Canyon, with quick access to the Arkansas River, Browns Canyon National Monument, Ruby Mountain, and the surrounding public lands.
Chalk Creek Canyon
County Road 162 heads west from Nathrop into Chalk Creek Canyon toward Mount Princeton, the Chalk Cliffs, National Forest, hiking trails, and historic St. Elmo.
Hot Springs
Mount Princeton is the best-known public hot springs destination, while the canyon also has smaller private soaking properties that we'll cover in the Nathrop cabins guide.
Fourteeners
Mount Princeton, Mount Antero, and other high peaks of the Sawatch Range rise directly west of Nathrop, with numerous trailheads and mountain roads nearby.
Less Town, More Valley
Nathrop works best for travelers who want mountains, river access, hot springs, and outdoor space more than they want to walk out the hotel door to nightlife.
Good to Know
Nathrop Is Rural
That's a big part of why people stay here, but it also means you should plan a little differently than you would in Salida or Buena Vista.
Nathrop has limited shopping and dining. For a large grocery run, broader restaurant selection, or most services, expect to head to Buena Vista or Salida.
If your lodging has a kitchen, stocking up before checking in can save a lot of unnecessary driving.
Cell service also becomes less predictable as you head farther into Chalk Creek Canyon and toward the surrounding National Forest.

Decide How Important Hot Springs Are
If soaking is a major part of the trip, staying directly at Mount Princeton may be worth it. If you only plan to visit the springs once, another lodging option may make more sense.
Check the Season
Mount Princeton and some other lodging operate year-round, while campground cabins and several smaller properties are primarily spring-through-fall operations.
Traveling With a Dog?
Pet policies vary substantially. Mount Princeton allows dogs in selected accommodations, Deer Valley has specific dog-friendly cabins, and Chalk Creek Campground does not allow pets in its cabins.
A Kitchen Can Be Useful
Because Nathrop doesn't have the restaurant selection of Buena Vista or Salida, a cabin or room with cooking facilities can be especially useful for multi-night stays.
There Isn't a Walkable Downtown
Plan on using your vehicle. Nathrop lodging is spread across the valley and Chalk Creek Canyon rather than concentrated around a central business district.
Book Summer Weekends Early
Hot springs weekends, summer holidays, fall color, and peak outdoor season can fill the area's smaller lodging properties well ahead of time.
Stay in the Middle of It
Nathrop Is One of the Valley's Best Basecamps
It doesn't have the restaurants and shops of Buena Vista or Salida, but Nathrop puts you closer to many of the things people actually come to the Arkansas River Valley to experience.
Browns Canyon is nearby. Chalk Creek runs into the mountains. Hot springs are minutes away. The Arkansas River cuts through the valley. Mount Princeton and Mount Antero rise directly above you.
If your trip is built around being outside, Nathrop is a very good place to sleep.
