Nathrop may have one of the most unusual collections of cabin stays anywhere in the Arkansas River Valley.
Chalk Creek runs through a geothermal corridor between Mount Princeton and Mount Antero, and several properties have natural hot springs directly onsite.
That means you can rent a historic log cabin with your own mineral soaking pool, book an entire house with private hot springs, stay at a family guest ranch, or choose a practical campground cabin closer to the Arkansas River.
Add Browns Canyon, St. Elmo, hiking, fishing, mountain roads, and two fourteeners overhead, and the lodging can easily become part of the trip itself.

Antero Hot Springs Cabins
Antero Hot Springs is one of Nathrop's standout places to stay: three separate mountain cabins along Chalk Creek, each with its own private natural hot-spring soaking pool.
The property sits beneath the Chalk Cliffs between Mount Princeton and Mount Antero, surrounded by wetlands, cottonwoods, creek water, wildlife, and National Forest.
The three accommodations are very different. Hortense is a restored historic log cabin from the early 1920s. Cottonwood is another smaller historic cabin, while Chalk Cliffs Chalet is a larger modernized mountain home.
All three have kitchens, private bathrooms, fireplaces or wood heat, and their own hand-shaped mineral soaking pools just outside.
Good for: private hot springs, couples, families, quiet weekends, winter stays, hiking, fishing, and travelers who want the lodging itself to be the destination.

Three Ways to Stay at Antero
Hortense Cabin
Built onsite in the early 1920s, Hortense is a restored historic log cabin with three queen bedrooms, a full kitchen, large great room, fireplace, sitting porch, and private soaking pool.
It's a good choice if the old Colorado cabin atmosphere is as important as the hot spring.
Cottonwood Cabin
Cottonwood is another restored log cabin, sized more for a couple or small family.
It combines the rustic feel of an old mountain cabin with a kitchen, private bathroom, fireplace, and its own hot-spring pool.
Chalk Cliffs Chalet
The roughly 1,900-square-foot chalet is the larger and more contemporary option, with a remodeled kitchen, expanded living areas, decks and patios, and a private hot-spring pool beneath the cliffs.
Best for: families and groups who want more room.
Comfort Without the Resort
Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park Cabins
Chalk Creek Campground is a good middle ground between camping and renting a full vacation home.
Its park-model cabins sleep up to six people and include a private bedroom with a queen bed, twin bunk beds, a pull-out sofa, full bathroom, and stocked kitchen with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, cookware, dishes, and utensils.
Linens are provided, and each cabin has a porch, outdoor seating, and a gas grill.
You also get access to the rest of the campground, including Chalk Creek, the playground, camp store, and the relaxed outdoor atmosphere that you don't get from a conventional hotel.
The location works especially well for exploring Browns Canyon, Mount Princeton Hot Springs, St. Elmo, Buena Vista, Salida, and the Arkansas River.
Cabins are seasonal and pets are not allowed inside them.
Good for: families, kitchens, longer stays, campground atmosphere, Browns Canyon, hot springs trips, and travelers who want a straightforward mountain basecamp.

Antero isn't the only place in Chalk Creek Canyon where your overnight rental comes with geothermal water. Several entire-home rentals have private springs of their own.
Aqua Hot Spring
Aqua is a private wellness-focused cabin between Mount Princeton and Mount Antero with its own natural geothermal soaking pool.
The multi-level house includes king bedrooms, a full kitchen, multiple bathrooms, large windows, balconies, outdoor space, and dedicated areas for yoga, meditation, massage, and quiet time.
The property is designed more around slowing down than packing every day with activities.
Overnight reservations generally require at least a two-night stay, and pets are not allowed.
Good for: couples, wellness trips, small groups, private soaking, yoga, and quiet mountain weekends.
Treehouse Hot Springs
Treehouse Hot Springs is an entire-home rental beside Chalk Creek with expansive treetop views across the valley.
The five-bedroom house has multiple gathering areas, a full kitchen and dining space, fireplaces, and room for a larger family or group.
Its defining feature is a private 14-by-27-foot natural hot-springs pool that can be kept between roughly 96 and 104 degrees.
Good for: families, groups, private hot springs, reunions, longer stays, and travelers who need significantly more room than a conventional cabin.
Whispering Willows Hot Springs
Whispering Willows is another entire-home hot-spring rental along Chalk Creek, directly west of Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort.
The roughly 3,100-square-foot home has three bedrooms, a full kitchen, large gathering spaces, a gazebo, fishing ponds, and Chalk Creek running along the property.
Private geothermal water features are the main attraction, giving guests a place to soak without sharing the experience with public day-use visitors.
A three-night minimum is currently required, and pets are not allowed.
Good for: families, small groups, longer stays, private hot springs, fishing, and travelers who want an entire house.
Classic Colorado Cabin Stay
Deer Valley Hot Springs Ranch
Deer Valley offers something different from Nathrop's private hot-spring vacation homes: the atmosphere of a long-running Colorado guest ranch.
The ranch has been operating in Chalk Creek Canyon since 1954 and offers a collection of individual mountain cabins in addition to its historic lodge.
Cabins come in several sizes and generally include two or three bedrooms, full kitchens, living and dining areas, fireplaces, and decks looking toward the surrounding mountains.
The larger layouts make Deer Valley particularly useful for families and groups who want to stay together rather than book several hotel rooms.
Good for: families, groups, traditional mountain cabins, kitchens, ranch atmosphere, longer stays, and reunions.
Cabin With Resort Amenities
Mount Princeton Hot Springs Cabins
Mount Princeton's cabins are the choice for travelers who want the space and privacy of a cabin but still want access to a full resort.
The cabins are within walking distance of the hot springs and include kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, fireplaces, Wi-Fi, and covered porches or patios.
Condo cabins sleep two to four people, full-size cabins sleep four to eight, and the largest cabins can accommodate up to ten.
Overnight stays include hot-springs access, and selected cabins are dog-friendly for an additional fee.
Good for: families, groups, hot springs, kitchens, resort amenities, selected dog-friendly stays, and winter trips.

Antero's smaller cabins or Aqua Hot Spring give you the strongest combination of privacy, mountain scenery, and your own geothermal soaking water.

Chalk Creek Campground cabins are practical and easy, while Deer Valley and Mount Princeton offer larger cabins with more room to spread out.
For a Group
Treehouse Hot Springs, Whispering Willows, Deer Valley, and Mount Princeton all work better when several people need to stay together.
For Private Hot Springs
Look first at Antero Hot Springs, Aqua, Treehouse, or Whispering Willows.
These aren't shared resort pools. The geothermal water is part of your private rental.
For Dogs
Pet policies vary significantly. Mount Princeton has selected dog-friendly cabins, while Aqua, Whispering Willows, and Chalk Creek Campground cabins do not allow pets.
Always confirm the exact unit before booking.
For an Outdoor Basecamp
Chalk Creek Campground is particularly useful if most of your trip will be spent exploring Browns Canyon, the Arkansas River, St. Elmo, hot springs, and surrounding trails.
Before You Book
A Few Things Are Different in Chalk Creek Canyon
This is a rural mountain corridor rather than a resort town. Restaurants, groceries, pharmacies, and most other services are in Buena Vista or Salida.
If your cabin has a kitchen, shop before checking in. That matters even more if you're staying several miles up Chalk Creek Canyon.
Cell coverage can also become unreliable, and some smaller properties intentionally offer a more disconnected experience.
Winter weather can make roads slick even when Highway 285 is clear, so check conditions before heading farther into the canyon.

Nathrop is one of those places where upgrading from a basic hotel room can completely change the trip.
Wake up beside Chalk Creek. Soak in a private hot spring. Drink coffee beneath the Chalk Cliffs. Sit around a campground after dark. Or stay in an old log cabin surrounded by the same mountains you're planning to explore the next morning.
