One River, Very Different Experiences
The Arkansas River is not one single rafting experience. It changes constantly as it drops from the high country near Leadville toward Buena Vista, Salida, Cañon City, Pueblo, and the lower Arkansas Valley.
Some sections are cold, fast, technical, and best left to experienced private boaters or advanced guided trips. Others are classic commercial rafting runs with established access points, professional outfitters, and rapids that work well for families and first-time guests.
This guide is meant to help you understand the major rafting sections before you choose where to launch, where to book, or which part of the river fits your group.

Private & Guided Trips
Private Boaters and Commercial Trips Share the River
The Arkansas River is used by private rafters, kayakers, anglers, stand-up paddlers, commercial outfitters, and other river users. Good planning and good river etiquette matter.
Private boaters are responsible for their own gear, rescue skills, group decisions, launch timing, and knowledge of the section. Commercial rafting guests are paying for a licensed outfitter, trained guides, safety systems, transportation, and trip logistics.
- Private boaters should check flows, hazards, access, and weather.
- Commercial guests should choose a trip that fits the least experienced person in the group.
- Everyone should respect anglers, other boaters, landowners, and AHRA rules.
Commercial Rafting
Choosing an Arkansas River Outfitter
Commercial rafting options vary by section, season, water level, age limits, and outfitter. Buena Vista, Salida, and Cañon City are the main hubs for guided trips.
Buena Vista Outfitters
Buena Vista is the main hub for Pine Creek, The Numbers, Browns Canyon, and shorter upper Arkansas trips. This area has the highest concentration of classic Arkansas River whitewater.
Salida Area Outfitters
Salida is a good base for Browns Canyon, Salida Valley, Bear Creek, and easier family-oriented sections. It is also a natural choice for visitors staying near Poncha Springs, Nathrop, or downtown Salida.
Cañon City Outfitters
Cañon City outfitters focus on Bighorn Sheep Canyon and Royal Gorge trips. This area is farther downstream and has a different canyon feel than the Buena Vista and Salida sections.

Monumental Expeditions is a small rafting company based near Nathrop between Buena Vista and Salida. They run guided trips on Browns Canyon, The Numbers, Salida Valley, and Bear Creek.
