Staying in Buena Vista
Buena Vista packs a surprising amount of lodging into a small mountain town. You can stay beside the Arkansas River in South Main, find a room right along historic Main Street, or stay a little farther out where parking is easier and the mountain views get bigger.
If you want restaurants, shops, trails, and the river within walking distance, downtown and South Main are hard to beat. If you're mostly here to raft, hike, soak in hot springs, ski, or head into the high country, staying along Highway 24 or just outside the center of town can be just as convenient.

What Part of Buena Vista Should You Stay In?
Buena Vista is compact, but its different lodging areas have noticeably different personalities.
South Main & the River
South Main sits directly along the Arkansas River beside the Buena Vista Whitewater Park. Restaurants, trails, river access, concerts, and downtown are all within easy reach.
Best for: couples, river trips, live music, walking, biking, and travelers who want the river to be part of their stay.
Historic Downtown
Main Street puts coffee shops, restaurants, bars, stores, parks, and local businesses right outside your door while keeping the Arkansas River within walking distance.
Best for: weekend trips, dining, shopping, families, and exploring town without driving everywhere.
Highway 24 & the Edge of Town
Staying slightly outside the downtown core usually means easier parking and straightforward access toward Leadville, Cottonwood Pass, Browns Canyon, hot springs, and the surrounding trailheads.
Best for: road trips, families, rafting, hiking, fishing, ski trips, and travelers hauling outdoor gear.
Stay Beside the River
South Main & Riverfront Lodging
South Main has become one of Buena Vista's most distinctive places to stay. The neighborhood sits directly beside the Arkansas River and whitewater park while still connecting easily to downtown.
Surf Hotel & Residences
Surf is really a collection of lodging options rather than a single hotel. The riverfront complex includes Surf Hotel, Surf Chateau, Surf House, River Flats, and several residences throughout South Main.
The main hotel is the most social option, with an onsite restaurant, live music venues, and a saltwater hot pool. The Chateau has a quieter, more intimate feel, while Surf House and the residences offer more space for longer stays and groups.
Good for: couples, riverfront stays, live music, special weekends, groups, and travelers who want a polished base without giving up outdoor access.
South Main Residences
If you like the South Main location but need a kitchen or more space, Surf also manages apartments and homes throughout the neighborhood.
These give you the walkability and river access of a hotel stay with more of the flexibility of a vacation rental.
Good for: families, groups, longer stays, kitchens, and people who want to park the car for a few days.
Walk Out the Door
Downtown Buena Vista Lodging
Staying in the center of Buena Vista gives you a very different experience from using town simply as a jumping-off point.
You can walk to breakfast, spend the day outside, come back for dinner or a drink, and head toward the river without getting back in the car.
Shorehouse Hotel
Shorehouse is a small four-suite boutique hotel right on Main Street. The rooms are closer to upscale apartments than standard hotel rooms, with a strong local design influence and plenty of space to settle in.
Its location above CKS River Supply puts restaurants, shopping, river access, trails, and South Main within easy walking distance.
Good for: couples, families, longer weekends, downtown walkability, and travelers who want more space.
The Inn
The Inn occupies a restored late-1800s building near Railroad and Main and mixes historic details with a modern boutique-hotel feel.
Check-in is largely self-service, making it a good fit for travelers who want a stylish room in the center of town without the formality of a larger hotel.
Good for: couples, weekend trips, historic character, Main Street access, and boutique lodging.
Lakeside Motel
Lakeside is a locally owned motel across from McPhelemy Park and Town Lake, just a short walk from Main Street.
It's simpler than Buena Vista's newer boutique hotels, but the location is excellent and some rooms include kitchenettes. Pet-friendly rooms are also available.
Good for: straightforward stays, families, travelers with dogs, downtown access, and people who would rather spend their money on the trip than the room.
Easy In, Easy Out
Practical Basecamps for Exploring the Valley
If you're planning to spend most of your time rafting, hiking, driving mountain passes, visiting hot springs, or chasing trailheads, being right on Main Street may matter less than parking and easy access.
Best Western Vista Inn
Best Western Vista Inn sits on the north side of Buena Vista along Highway 24 and offers a more traditional hotel experience.
Amenities include complimentary breakfast, an indoor pool, and easy access toward Leadville, Browns Canyon, downtown, Cottonwood Pass, and nearby hot springs.
Good for: families, road trips, traditional hotel amenities, rafting, hiking, and ski trips.
Buffalo Peaks Lodge
Buffalo Peaks Lodge offers a quieter, more traditional mountain stay just outside the busiest part of town. The rustic log bed-and-breakfast sits beside the local golf course with views toward the surrounding mountains.
With only a handful of guest rooms, it feels much more personal than a conventional roadside hotel.
Good for: couples, quiet stays, bed-and-breakfast travelers, mountain views, and anyone who prefers a small lodge to a larger hotel.
Stay in the Middle of It
Buena Vista Makes an Easy Upper Valley Basecamp
Buena Vista sits in a particularly useful spot. Browns Canyon begins just south of town, the Collegiate Peaks rise immediately to the west, and Cottonwood Pass climbs toward the Continental Divide from the edge of town.
Rafting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, hot springs, fourteener trailheads, scenic drives, and winter recreation are all close enough that you can stay in one place and build several very different days around it.

Summer Weekends Fill Up
Buena Vista gets busy during rafting season, festival weekends, holidays, and peak summer travel. Book earlier if you're set on a particular property or a weekend stay.
South Main Is About Location
If you're staying in South Main, part of what you're paying for is the ability to walk directly to the river, trails, restaurants, concerts, and downtown.
Main Street Is Very Walkable
Buena Vista's downtown core is compact. Staying near Main Street makes it easy to walk to coffee, food, shops, parks, and the river.
Traveling With a Dog?
Several Buena Vista properties offer dog-friendly rooms, but not every room type allows pets. Check the current rules, fees, and available pet rooms before booking.
Think About Your Daily Direction
Heading repeatedly toward Leadville or Twin Lakes? The north side of town is convenient. Spending most of the trip around Browns Canyon, Nathrop, or Mount Princeton? Nearly anywhere in BV still works well.
Don't Overlook Shoulder Season
Spring and fall can be excellent times to stay in Buena Vista. The town is quieter, temperatures are comfortable for many outdoor activities, and the surrounding mountains change dramatically with the season.
