Staying in Leadville

Leadville is different from most Colorado mountain towns. The historic downtown is compact, genuinely walkable, and still filled with buildings left from the mining boom of the late 1800s.

That history carries over into the lodging. You can sleep in an 1880s hotel on Harrison Avenue, stay in a restored Victorian house, choose a modernized roadside motel, or grab an affordable bunk before an early morning in the mountains.

Staying in town also puts you in a useful spot for exploring Turquoise Lake, Twin Lakes, Mount Massive, Mount Elbert, Ski Cooper, the Mineral Belt Trail, and the upper Arkansas River Valley.

Choose Your Stay

What Kind of Leadville Trip Are You Planning?

Leadville isn't large enough to have dramatically different hotel districts. The bigger decision is what kind of lodging experience you want.

Stay in Historic Leadville

Leadville's Victorian hotels and guesthouses put you inside some of the same buildings that were here during the city's silver-mining boom.

Best for: history, couples, weekend trips, downtown dining, museums, and exploring Harrison Avenue on foot.

Choose a Modern Basecamp

Several older Leadville motels have been renovated into comfortable, independent mountain lodging with easy parking and rooms designed around outdoor travelers.

Best for: skiing, hiking, biking, road trips, dogs, outdoor gear, and travelers who value convenience.

Save Money or Bring a Group

Leadville also has hostels and larger shared-house lodging that work especially well for climbers, cyclists, skiers, race weekends, families, and groups.

Best for: budget travel, groups, shared kitchens, longer trips, and early starts in the mountains.

Sleep in the History

Historic Leadville Lodging

In Leadville, "historic hotel" isn't just marketing. Some of the town's lodging actually dates to the mining boom that built Leadville.

Historic Delaware Hotel

Built in 1886, the Delaware is Leadville's surviving grand Victorian hotel and one of the most distinctive places to stay in town.

It sits directly on Harrison Avenue, putting restaurants, shops, museums, and much of historic downtown outside the door. The building retains the creaks, unusual angles, period details, and character you'd expect from a hotel built during Leadville's mining boom.

This is the choice if you want your hotel to feel like part of the Leadville experience rather than just somewhere to sleep.

Good for: history, couples, downtown weekends, architecture, and travelers who prefer character over a standardized hotel room.

The Majestic

The Majestic is a small five-room guesthouse inside a restored 1880s Victorian home just a few steps from downtown.

It feels more like staying in a historic Leadville house than checking into a traditional hotel. Guests have private bedrooms along with shared spaces that create a more relaxed, communal atmosphere.

Good for: couples, small groups, historic character, quiet stays, and travelers who like independent guesthouses.

The Mountain Hideaway Lodge

Mountain Hideaway occupies a large Victorian house just one block from Harrison Avenue. Individual rooms can be rented, or the entire property can work as a large group stay.

Guests share a full kitchen, living spaces, hot tub, sauna, and exercise area. Most individual rooms have their own private bathroom.

It combines the feel of a historic house with amenities that are especially useful after a long day hiking, skiing, riding, or exploring the high country.

Good for: groups, couples, longer stays, shared kitchens, hot tub and sauna access, and downtown walkability.

More Than Old Buildings

Stay Where Leadville Happened

Leadville's history isn't separated from the modern town. You still walk the same street grid, stay in many of the same buildings, and look toward the same mountains that drew miners here more than a century ago.

If local history is part of why you're visiting, staying downtown adds a lot to the experience.

Updated Motels & Easy Adventure Stays

Not everyone wants creaky Victorian floors. Leadville also has several straightforward places designed around easy parking, comfortable beds, outdoor gear, and getting back outside the next morning.

The Timberline

The Timberline is a renovated independent motel directly on Harrison Avenue, combining the simplicity of a roadside motel with a much more polished modern feel.

Standard rooms include practical touches such as mini-fridges, microwaves, coffee and tea, while larger kitchenette rooms work well for families and longer stays. There's also a larger Loft with a full kitchen.

Every room is dog-friendly, and the outdoor courtyard has fire pits and gathering space.

Good for: dogs, couples, families, ski weekends, race trips, outdoor gear, and travelers who want to walk downtown.

Old Tale Inn

The Old Tale Inn takes a different approach. The former 1950s Alps Motel has been rebuilt as an eleven-room modern motor court near the south end of Harrison Avenue.

All rooms are ground level, you park close to your door, and check-in is handled with a door code rather than through a traditional front desk.

There's also an outdoor hot tub, which is a particularly welcome amenity after skiing, hiking, riding, or simply spending a cold day at 10,000 feet.

Good for: road trips, couples, easy parking, late arrivals, outdoor weekends, and travelers who want simple modern lodging.

Affordable & Adventure-Friendly

Inn the Clouds Hostel & Inn

Inn the Clouds is one of the most useful lodging options in Leadville for travelers who care more about the adventure than having a conventional hotel room.

The property offers a mix of dorm beds and private rooms, including larger family rooms. Guests share a fully equipped kitchen and generous common spaces, making it practical for longer trips and anyone trying to keep food costs down.

It's especially geared toward hikers, cyclists, skiers, and other outdoor travelers, with space for bikes and winter gear.

It's also only a few blocks from Harrison Avenue, so staying at a hostel doesn't mean being stuck outside town.

Good for: budget travel, solo travelers, climbers, skiers, cyclists, families, groups, and anyone who wants access to a real kitchen.

Leadville Lodging Tips

Staying in Leadville comes with a few considerations that don't matter as much farther down the Arkansas River Valley.

Give the Altitude Some Respect

Leadville sits above 10,000 feet. If you're arriving from much lower elevation, take it easier than usual at first, drink plenty of water, and remember that alcohol and hard exercise can feel different up here.

Downtown Is Easy to Walk

Stay close to Harrison Avenue and you can walk to restaurants, coffee shops, bars, museums, shops, and the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad.

Summer Nights Are Still Cool

Even when the lower Arkansas Valley is hot, Leadville nights can get chilly. Bring layers year-round and don't assume summer means warm evenings.

Winter Is a Real Season Here

Leadville lodging stays useful well beyond summer. Ski Cooper, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, snowmobiling, and winter events keep the town active when much of the valley has slowed down.

Race Weekends Are Different

Leadville's major running and mountain bike events can completely change lodging availability. If your visit overlaps a major race, book well ahead and expect a much busier town.

Traveling With a Dog?

Several Leadville properties welcome dogs, but policies, fees, room restrictions, and limits vary. Check directly with the property before booking.

Stay High

Leadville Is More Than a Stop on Highway 24

It's easy to drive through Leadville on the way to somewhere else. Staying overnight changes the experience.

You get quiet mornings on Harrison Avenue, evening light on Mount Massive, quick access to Turquoise Lake, and enough time to explore the mining history instead of simply passing it through the windshield.

For a town this small, there's a surprising amount to do once you give it more than a few hours.
