The Arkansas River corridor is long enough that choosing the right place to stay can change your entire trip.
Leadville, Buena Vista, Nathrop, Salida and Cañon City are all good basecamps, but they are good for different reasons.
The best choice depends on whether your trip revolves around rafting, hiking, hot springs, fishing, nightlife, history or simply spending as much time outside as possible.

Leadville: best for high-country exploring
Leadville is the northernmost major basecamp in this guide and feels substantially different from the towns downstream.
The elevation is higher, nights are cooler and the surrounding landscape has a distinctly alpine character. Leadville works especially well if your priorities include hiking, mountain history, scenic drives, Twin Lakes and exploring the upper Arkansas River.
It is less convenient if most of your plans are centered on Browns Canyon, Salida or the Royal Gorge.
Stay in Leadville if you want:
- High-elevation mountain scenery
- Easy access to Twin Lakes
- Mining history
- Cooler summer evenings
- Hiking and biking to be the focus of your trip

Buena Vista: best all-around outdoor basecamp
Buena Vista may be the easiest answer for travelers who want to sample a little of everything.
From town you have quick access to the Arkansas River, Browns Canyon, The Numbers, Cottonwood Pass, hiking, mountain biking and several hot spring areas.
The downtown is compact enough to be convenient while still functioning as a genuine mountain town rather than a self-contained resort.
Stay in Buena Vista if you want:
- Browns Canyon rafting
- The Numbers and upper-river whitewater
- Hot springs
- Mountain biking and hiking
- A central Upper Arkansas location

Nathrop and Chalk Creek: best central location
Nathrop doesn’t have the downtown scene of Buena Vista or Salida, but geographically it is one of the most useful places to stay in the entire valley.
It sits between the two towns and near Browns Canyon, Chalk Creek, Mount Princeton and the road toward St. Elmo.
If your trip is built around rafting one day, hot springs the next and exploring both Buena Vista and Salida, the Nathrop area can save a surprising amount of driving.
It is especially appealing to campers and travelers who would rather wake up under cottonwoods or beside a creek than walk to restaurants from a downtown hotel.

Salida: best mix of river and town
Salida is the strongest choice for travelers who want outdoor recreation without giving up a lively downtown.
The Arkansas River runs directly past the historic center of town, making it unusually easy to combine a morning outside with restaurants, galleries, shops and drinks later in the day.
Salida is also well positioned for easier rafting sections, Bear Creek, Browns Canyon, fishing, Monarch Pass and trips south or west into the surrounding mountains.
Stay in Salida if you want:
- A walkable downtown
- Restaurants and breweries
- Easy river access
- Family rafting and fishing
- A basecamp that still feels active after dinner

Cañon City: best for the Royal Gorge region
If the Royal Gorge is one of the main reasons for your trip, staying all the way upstream in Buena Vista does not make much sense.
Cañon City puts you close to Royal Gorge rafting, Bighorn Sheep Canyon, the Royal Gorge Bridge area, the railroad, hiking, mountain biking and the warmer lower-elevation landscape of Fremont County.
Cañon City also tends to have a broader selection of conventional lodging than some of the smaller mountain communities upstream.
Stay in Cañon City if you want:
- Royal Gorge attractions
- Royal Gorge or Bighorn Sheep Canyon rafting
- Warmer weather
- Lower-elevation hiking and biking
- Easy access from Colorado Springs

What if you want to explore the entire river?
Trying to visit Leadville, Buena Vista, Salida and Cañon City from a single hotel is possible, but it creates unnecessary driving.
If you have four or more nights, consider splitting the trip.
A simple itinerary might look like this:
- Nights 1-2: Leadville or Buena Vista
- Nights 3-4: Nathrop or Salida
- Night 5: Cañon City
That turns Highway 24 and Highway 50 into part of the trip rather than a road you repeatedly backtrack on.
Hotels or camping?
The Arkansas River corridor is particularly good for combining both.
Spend a night or two camping near the river, then move into town for a shower, restaurant dinner and a comfortable bed. Or use one campground as a basecamp and make day trips in both directions.
The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area operates developed campgrounds at several locations along the river. Reservations are recommended during busy periods.
Our simplest recommendation
Choose Leadville for alpine country and history.
Choose Buena Vista for the widest range of outdoor recreation.
Choose Nathrop for a quiet and very central basecamp.
Choose Salida for the best combination of river access and town life.
Choose Cañon City for the Royal Gorge and the lower canyon country.
There really isn’t one “best” Arkansas River town. The better question is which part of the river you want outside your door when you wake up.
